🏥 Healthcare

The Portuguese public health system (SNS) provides universal coverage. EU citizens can use their EHIC; non-EU residents must register for a local health number (numero de utente).

Public Hospital

Hospital de Faro

Centro Hospitalar Universitario do Algarve (CHUA) in Faro is the region's main public hospital. It has an A&E department (urgencias), maternity unit, oncology centre and most specialist departments. The Portimao unit covers the western Algarve.

Primary Care

Health Centres

Centros de saude are your first point of contact with the SNS. Register at your local centre with your NIF and proof of address to receive a numero de utente. Every municipality has at least one. GP appointments are free or low-cost for registered users.

Medication

Pharmacies

Look for the green cross (cruz verde). Over 40 farmacias operate across the Algarve. Pharmacists can advise on minor ailments and dispense many medications without a prescription. An after-hours rota (farmacia de servico) ensures 24-hour coverage: check the door notice or dial 118.

Dental

Dental Care

Dental care is mostly private in Portugal. The SNS covers emergency dental treatment and children's dental check-ups through the "cheque dentista" programme. Private dental clinics are widespread in Faro, Albufeira, Lagos and Portimao, with many offering English-speaking staff.

Private

Private Clinics

HPA Health Group operates Hospital Particular do Algarve with units in Faro, Gambelas and Alvor. Private health insurance (seguro de saude) from Multicare, Medis or Advancecare gives access to shorter wait times and private facilities. Many expats combine SNS registration with private cover.

Wellbeing

Mental Health Services

The SNS provides psychiatric and psychological support through health centres and CHUA. Referrals from your GP are usually needed. Private English-speaking therapists practise in Faro, Loulé and Lagos. SOS Voz Amiga (213 544 545) offers a free emotional support line in Portuguese.

📋 Bureaucracy & Admin

Portuguese bureaucracy takes patience, but most tasks follow a clear process. Start early, bring originals plus photocopies of everything, and expect some queuing.

Tax ID

Getting Your NIF

The Numero de Identificacao Fiscal (NIF) is essential for almost everything: opening a bank account, signing a rental contract, connecting utilities. Apply at any Financas office with your passport. EU citizens can apply directly; non-EU citizens need a fiscal representative. Takes about 30 minutes if you go early.

Residency

Registering with AIMA

The Agencia para a Integracao, Migracoes e Asilo (AIMA, formerly SEF) handles residency permits for non-EU citizens. EU citizens register at the local Camara Municipal for a Certificado de Registo. Book appointments online at aima.gov.pt. Processing times vary: allow 2 to 6 months.

Driving

Driving Licence Exchange

EU licences are valid in Portugal indefinitely. Non-EU licence holders must exchange within 90 days of residency (or 185 days for some nationalities). Apply at the IMT (Instituto da Mobilidade e dos Transportes) office in Faro or online at imt-ip.pt. You will need a medical certificate from a recognised doctor.

Vehicles

Car Registration

Imported vehicles must pass an IPO inspection (Inspecao Periodica Obrigatoria) and be registered with the IRN. Annual road tax (IUC: Imposto Unico de Circulacao) applies based on engine size and CO2 emissions. Portuguese insurance is mandatory. The Faro IMT office handles vehicle registration.

Social Security

NISS Registration

The Numero de Identificacao de Seguranca Social (NISS) is needed if you work in Portugal or claim benefits. Register at the local Seguranca Social office or online at seg-social.pt. Bring your NIF, passport, and employment contract. EU citizens can transfer social security contributions under EU regulations.

Education

School Enrolment

Portuguese public schools are free and compulsory for children aged 6 to 18. Enrolment happens at the local school (agrupamento de escolas) with proof of address, vaccination records and previous school transcripts. International schools operate in Vilamoura (Nobel Algarve), Lagoa, Silves and near Faro.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions about living in the Algarve.

Do I need a NIF to rent a property?

Yes. Landlords, estate agents, utilities companies and banks all require your NIF. It is the first thing you should arrange when arriving in Portugal. You can apply at any Financas office with your passport.

Can I use the public health system?

EU/EEA citizens can use the SNS with a valid EHIC card for temporary stays. For long-term residents, register at your local centro de saude with your NIF and proof of address. Non-EU residents with legal residency are also entitled to SNS access.

How do I find an English-speaking doctor?

Private clinics in tourist areas commonly have English-speaking staff. HPA Health Group and other private hospitals typically offer consultations in English. Your local expat community or consulate can recommend specific practitioners.

Is the water safe to drink?

Tap water in the Algarve meets EU drinking water standards and is safe to drink. Many residents prefer bottled or filtered water due to the taste from mineral content. Aguas do Algarve supplies the region.

What is the cost of living compared to the UK?

Generally 20 to 30 per cent lower than the UK. Groceries, dining out and local services are notably cheaper. Rent varies: coastal and tourist areas (Vilamoura, Albufeira) are pricier, while inland towns (Silves, Sao Bras de Alportel) offer better value.

Do I need to speak Portuguese?

English is widely spoken in tourist and expat-heavy areas. However, Portuguese is essential for dealing with government offices, smaller shops and rural services. Even basic Portuguese is greatly appreciated and makes daily life much easier.
